Product Description

Details

The luxury fur felt Adventurer/Poet Hat is indeed a favourite among explorers and archaeologists. Our iconic adventurer poet rose to popularity after it was worn by Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones films. It has a tall open crown that can be shaped to suit the wearer. Made from fine fur felt, this is a true Christys’ Classic. It is designed with a 3.8 cm (1.5 ins) ribbon band and bow. Handmade in our Oxfordshire factory, the Adventurer/Poet is also fully lined with the Christys' red satin and printed Christys crest, accompanied with a leather sweatband. The Fur Felt can cope admirably in inclement weather - a little steam and gentle brush can restore the fur fibres back to their normal state after an arduous adventure.

I own a number of fedoras but this hat is by far the best. I prefer a very high crown so this is perfect for me, the quality is evident and I wish I had bought one before. Buy one you won't be disappointed. (Posted on 11/09/2017)

Nice dimensions, with proper high crown. Sizing was true....at least for me. This felt is about average and appropriate for pricing. A tad stiffer than was expecting. Bashing requires spritzing or a liberal dosing of steam (or you will end up with small creases at shaping end points). Premium felt actually can be shaped without steam/water...but that also comes at a premium cost. But again, for the pricepoint, a decent hat. (Posted on 22/08/2017)

I don't know how many years since the initial release of this hat, but I wish I had found it earlier; prior to spending hundreds to find the right crown height and brim dimensions. That said...I hate to be the one to add confusion to the potential next buyer, but I found sizing to be accurate. I've got a pin head (6 7/8 - 56), but with all the reviews of small sizing...decided on the 57. A tad large for my noggin'. No worries though...if you've got some experience with shaping felts, the use of a little steam, or a thorough spritzing of water can get you up or down a size. In my case of needing a little shrinkage; after spritzing, I let it sit in a hot car till it's dry. Yep, I know...sounds extreme but it works and its not a drastic change; and good felt (as is with this Christys'), is forgiving and can actually take more abuse than you might think.
My color choice was Bessemer; a very dark charcoal (some might even say, a faded black). Not a heavy felt; its dress hat weight, and shapes nicely.
Looking forward to Fall to employ this as my main Fedora. All in all a great purchase. Well worth the layout for a respectable piece of headwear. (Posted on 03/08/2017)
Decent fair weather hatReview by Bill F.

I read the reviews before I bought mine. A lot of people said they run small so you should order a larger size. This is my third hat. Of my two others that are marked the same size , one fits perfectly, the other one is slightly snug. I went one size up as some suggested. I can tuck my ears into this one. Not sure what to say about the sizing. I padded the liner to make it fit, so problem solved. But if I could do it all over again I would not buy one size up.

This hat got lightly rained on one time and was basically destroyed. The brim is fine, but the crown of the hat is lumpy now . This hat was definitely not made to handle inclement weather. My other hat handles downpours just fine. You just have to let it dry out and it's ready for another round. I'm probably going to just throw this one away and start over with a hat from the same maker as my others. The other hat does cost about $100 more though. That's what I get for being cheap

The hat does look nice, it feels pleasantly soft. It's very lightweight and comfortable. I guess it would be a good hat if you're absolutely sure you're not going to get rained on. It's decent enough for the price, but an "adventurer" it is not.

You certainly get what you pay for. First off Christy's customer service is 110% spot on. Answered every question I had thoroughly on Facebook and even rang me. You can't beat that. They were prompt too.

Adventurer Fedora: For the price and the fact this hat is made in England by a legendary hatter you simply cannot beat the price and quality. Just have a look at other fur felt fedoras made in the UK. They are £200 and up. I own three Christy's fedoras. I own one Adventurer in Navy and it is a perfect shade of midnight blue to my eyes. It's the darkest blue you can get without being black. When the light hits it you cannot tell it's blue from the sunlit glow off of the felt.

Huge advantage to this being fur felt is you could accidently sit on the hat, and smash it and easily correct it by reshaping it yourself with some steam or taking it to your local hatters. If you buy a wool felt fedora although you may Be able to do this the amount of times you can reshape a wool hat is limited. You are much better off buying a hat for life by paying extra and getting the fur felt.

Sizing: Compared to my other fur felt fedoras this hat runs small. I would strongly advise buying a full size larger to tournament measurement. I am a 61cm with my other fur felt fedoras but with this one Inhad to buy a 62cm.

Colour options: there are some fantastic choices that stay true to the traditional colour shades of the 1920's prohibition era up to the 1940's gentlemen or gangster along with some more interesting vibrant shades of Wine and Ink Blue to pick from.

I would like to see Christy's expand on colour options maybe offer a Plum, and a Racing Green shade to compete with the more earthy shade of Elm Green they offer.

I own four Christy's fur felt fedoras. One is the Adventurer in Navy.
I own a silver grey, wine, and Elm. That fedora was made by Christy's specifically for The Classic Cap Company ( hatters in Westcliff On Sea Essex.) That model of fedora was called the "Johnny D" fedora. It was far superior to the Adventurer, in as much that those fedoras had a ribbon trim along the brim and the crown was taller the brim was wider, they looked more refined and period correct for the 1920's-1940's fedora. The Adventurer is the closest you can get to the Johnny D fedoras Christy's use to make corn the classic cap company. Hopefully with the popularity of hats increasing Christy's will make those again.

Face shape: I have a heart face shape and usually wear a 61cm fedora. All other fedoras I have tried with the exception of the Adventurer and the Johnny D fedora (Christy's but use to make) look like little boys play cowboy hats on my head. So keep that in mind as this fedora is definitely suitable for those with a larger head.

All in all fantastic fedora, just wish Christy's would go back to offering the Johnny D fur felt fedora with the larger brim with ribbon trim, taker crown as it was superior. If I had a way I would upload pictures with this message to show everyone interested.

This is an append to my other review. I agree with DRONES33 that the sizing runs small. In other words, if you are familiar with your head measurement, go a size larger. (Posted on 05/10/2016)

Wanted a second hat to knock around in, one that I wouldn't mind getting a little bruised. I'm a little strange this way but I know what I like and replaced the brown hatband (bought the sable Poet) with a black grosgraon ribbon and will replace the satin lining with silk. Up until 4 in the a.m. shaping the crown, fiddling with it and just looking at it. I don't like drawing attention to myself, but like I said I know what I like and will have to get used to saying "thanks" when people compliment the hat. I would have attached a picture if I could because it's worth the proverbial thousand words. (Posted on 21/09/2016)

The Adventurer is a thing of beauty. The craftsmanship is first class, the quality of the felt hast to be seen to be appreciated, and the fact that it arrives open-crowned means that , once shaped, the hat will be uniquely yours.
When buying from Christys however I would strongly advise ordering one size bigger than your usual. I have several fedoras, all of which are size 57 and fit perfectly,. My new Adventurer, although labelled 57 measures no more than 56 and had to be slowly stretched with an adjustable hat retainer to make it fit. This is the second time I've had to do this with a Christys, so it's clearly a sizing issue.
Great product however, excellent service, and apart from an easily avoidable problem with fit, I'd absolutely recommend the Adventurer to all collectors of Indy gear, and to any gentleman with a sense of style. (Posted on 10/05/2016)

I bought this hat for my partner after discovering he has lusted after one for years and years. We made it to one of the Christy's shops where he was torn between buying this hat and a more everyday affair that eventually won out.

So, I bought him this for our anniversary last week and it was love at first sight. The hat itself is extremely well made but with that luxurious feel, especially with the red on the inside. It is really versatile in terms of being able to shape and looks great on. We just need to embark on an adventure now to really give it a chance to shine! (Posted on 05/04/2016)

Love this hat. Finally, a hat for the ages. Have been searching for this hat trick the past 25 years, Does not disappoint and people always comment on the style and vintage look. Perhaps a little too brown. Maybe update the color on the site. Love my hat, thank you Christy & Co Ltd. (Posted on 03/01/2016)
